Phony System Recovery Virus?
I have an HP Laptop (2 years old) with Vista Home Premium. A virus/malware/trojan (pick a name) came through that started a phony system recovery program. I doubt the validity of the system recovery program as it WOULD NOT allow me to cancel or stop it from running, and it started running without me prompting it to do so. Because of a Vista error that wouldn't recognize the DVD-ROM drive.. I couldn't restore from the DVD. I bought WIN 7 (full version - not upgrade) and reformatted (completely deleted) the hard drive. The install was successful and I was running the laptop for all of 3 days before this "malware" came back again.
Any Ideas or solutions --- and how come NONE of the major PC security/maintenance vendors have a solution for these types of malware (Norton, McAfee, Trend-Micro etc.) or am I not searching for them correctly?

ESET is avg, avira, spybot, malewarebytes, ccleaner and reg clean all in one. eset has not missed a single virus in 6 years of testing labs.
wikipedia it if you don't believe me. plus I'm not a top contributor in internet security for nothing...lol I'm just trying to help ppl out. everyone seems to think just because AVG, NORTON, MCAFEE,
TREND MICRO AND PC TOOL ARE EVERY WHERE THEY IS MUST BE GOOD. THEIR ONLY COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS AND THEY SUCK.
Hi There,
You did all the right things but somehow the virus reinstalled itself.
My guess is that you backed up some photos or other files and the virus had already infected them.
That happened to me and I lost some CDs with family pictures when I reinstalled the O/S but had backed up first.
I found the infected CDs by doing a virus scan before opening any of the files.
It is possible someone has the password for your network (if you have one) and is simply reinstalling the virus.
Also possible you have logged on to a site that has the malware just waiting for anyone that visits.
The malware writers are getting better everyday and every time a new virus appears it takes some time for the updates to ha[[en. they are always "one virus behind".
Panda has a new free antivirus that is "in the cloud". The program is located on their site and is always up to date (as much as possible).
I have not tried it yet but it sounds like a good plan. Link below
Hope this helpa,
Al
A couple of possibilities 1. When you installed Win7 you let it reformat the hard drive. If you did, it may not have done a complete reformat and not removed the original infection. Try doing a complete drive reformat with a disk created on another computer and then installing Win7 2. You have a USB key that is infected and you accidentally re-infected your machine 3. You have a home network and another machine on the network is infected, and passing along the virus. 4. You are not running current anti-virus and anti-malware softwre, and are picking the virus up on the net. In any case, I would try AVGFree and my antivius and then follow that up with SuperAntiSpyware. That combination has done a good job for me in the past Good Luck
Because the Malware companies can't keep up with the infections that come out daily, we / they are losing the battle, It's up to the user ti use safe browsing techniques. If you reinstalled and are infected you need to review where you browsing.
1 Anti Virus anyone will do, there is no best whatever works for you.
1 Firewall, Windows 7 and Vista firewalls are good enough.
install Spywarebalster, Install (Wot) Web of trust.
Run Malwarebytes once a week, clear out temp files, history, and cookies often.
