Why is system of a down so popular?
I mean i like hard rock and heavy metal and all, but i cant see why system of a down are so big. They have some of the absolute stupidest songs ive ever heard. Take the Jet Pilot song-am i the only one who thinks the majority of their songs are pure crap? Chop Suey is the only one that even comes close to being called a song. And the new Hypnotize one, why is a song with a line in it "im just sitting in my car waiting" sung over and over, whys that so popular?

Because they are different--and people like different. That's why they are so popular.
And I agree with you--I'm not a big fan of theirs and I wouldn't call most of their songs music. I like just about every kind of music, but system of a down is not on my list.
Looking at all those other answers it would seem that System of a Down isn't as popular as I thought they were.
Comparing them with other popular bands, they actually aren't that bad. I mean, crap like Eminem and Britney Spears is popular. I guess people don't know music when they hear it.
It seems that knowing music theory and working hard writing worthwhile songs is a guaranteed way to not become popular.
System of a Down is so popular in comparison to a lot of other bands out now because of their ability to take the abstract and put it into a mainstream genre. Of course there are many abstact bands, Radiohead being one, but they don't appeal as greatly to a general pop culture.

Well according to some ppl, they think they are good (like me) and like their songs. Ppl might like listening to it in their car, not listening to the words.
Good question!!!! They are overrated, there are a lot of decent bands out there that deserve the air time a hell of alot more than "System" does, I can't stand them.
