Do you realize American media makes India look poor?

In hollywood films/ media India is always depicted as a backwards, poor, third world country. By doing this doesn't it limit peoples knowledge of the country? Yes there is poverty in India but is it limited to that? Today in 2007 there is a 420 million middle class population. Doctors, computer engineers, businessmen, etc...India is a very diverse country with many cultures, languages and religions. North India is snowy, The east is mountains, the west is beaches and the south is Jungle..We have modern cities as well as poor villages. We have positives and negatives but the media only exposes the negatives of everything and I feel as if this gives people a very negative view of the country..Am I the only one that feels this way or are there any other Indians or westerners that have realized this?

Update:

thanks so far for the great answers...Hopefully sometime the world will see what India really is!

  • No you are not alone. But I will tell people here one thing...

America has been free for more 200 years now. India barely got its freedom from Britain in 1947. still, in such a short time, it's almost caught up to America. No other country has done that. Can you imagine if in 60 years, India has gained so much...imagine in 60 more years....

    It's an amazing achievement.

India is one of the countries with bright students. In america, people from India are in respected professions.

    Don't worry.....world will see.

  • It's possibly because more than 800 million people in India live on less than 20 rupees per day. Yes, the Indian economy has flourished since the introduction of foreign investment, but income inequality remains high.

Sorry, but it's not the American media that is making India "look" poor. It is only highlighting how hundreds of millions of people (more than that of the entire US population) are still living in abject poverty.

It is said that a nation is judged by how well it treats its least fortunate. On that point, India has failed theirs.

  • They have always had an upper class. The "middle class" is growing fast, but there are cultural traditions that will maintain a large poor population.

  • You're not the only one that has those feelings. I get tired of other countries thinking all Americans are fat, lazy, and stupid because of how the media portray us, and some of these folks have never even met an American in their life, much less been over here.

BTW: Thanks for broadening our horizons.

  • i'm with u! india may seem poor to america, but that is so not true. india has enough money to produce smart kids and many great movies, so they shouldn't really b considered poor!

  • I really see nothing in the media about India, its mostly Pakistan

  • I know what you mean. I guess it is just stereotyping again.
