What do astronauts eat?
Hey everyone, in Chinese we are doing a project where we have $10 dollars (American dollars) to spend on buying any type of food that relates to a theme. So I was thinking we would do "Food from the Moon", because the most creative project gets extra credit on the next test. I was going to buy Astronaut ice cream (I do realize this isn't really what they eat, but hey, it says astronaut :P) but I'm not quite sure what else they eat? Any suggestions, preferably cheap?

freeze dry food, desolated food, add water food, powdered food, and boxed food
Problem is various foods were tried to see what could be eaten in space. They didn't know at the time if eating was even possible at first. Each mission had different foods though you could categorize them by program, Project Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, the Shuttle, the ISS and the Chinese, Soviet and Indian missions.
However, a corned beef sandwich was smuggled onboard Gemini III. They got into a lot of trouble for that as it invalidated some of the mission data, there was a congressional hearing about it. You could make a corned beef sandwich.
Today, a wide variety of menu items are available for astronauts as space food. They can choose from meals including beef stroganoff, chicken teriyaki, and turkey tetrazzini. Typically, an astronaut will have the chance to decide his own space food meals from a menu list well in advance of the shuttle launch.
Space food is provided in disposable containers that can be attached to the astronaut's meal tray, which is strapped to his lap, so that the containers do not float freely through space. The astronaut must consume each part of the meal separately, not starting on another course until the previous one is finished. Once the space food has been eaten, the meal packaging must be disposed of, and is put into a trash compactor to eliminate waste.
In recent years, some chefs have begun to experiment with creating space food. Celebrity chefs including Emeril Legasse and Rachael Ray have designed meals which have been offered on NASA shuttle flights.
