It depends on where you live. If you're in the U.S., $500 isn't that great a deal; you can get the 2-lens kit for $429 shipped from http://www.buydig.com/ (they're reputable). That frees up enough extra cash to buy a memory card, a cheap tripod, a pack of lens paper, and a camera bag. I understand that cameras are a bit more expensive in other parts of the world in which case $500 may be a deal.
The Olympus E-410 is an excellent compact DSLR and the 2 kit lenses are generally highly rated for their class. Corner sharpness is good, there's little light fall off (vignetting), contrast is good, and CA is manageable. The 2 lenses combined give you a DSLR with a whopping 10X zoom; it's really a value. The body itself produces great images up to ISO 800. ISO 1600 pictures are ok but will require some post processing for the best results.
The E-410 lacks a degree of customization reserved for the E-510 which also has image stabilization. The 2-lens E-510 kit shouldn't be that far off in terms of price. If you can deal with a little more bulk and weight and can spend a little more, consider the E-510.
You should go to your local electronics store that stocks the E-410 and other models from other brands so you can get a feel and compare them. The size of the E-410 works for some and doesn't for others. You may find that Nikon's D40/D40X/D60 DSLRs have a friendlier user interface. The Nikons also offer on-screen guides so it may be easier for a beginner or the casual shooter.
It relies upon upon how serious your husband is together with his pictures. If he's fairly serious, then the Nikon may be the greater useful determination. the time-honored would be larger with the D40x. If he's largely a hobbyist and in basic terms shoots relatives outings and trip trips, then the E-410 is superb too, and the greater lens makes that outfit greater tempting. It actual is superb as a intense-end relatives digital camera. If he's seeking to do something long term, get the Nikon. that's because of the fact there is greater lenses obtainable which will greater healthful that digital camera and long term, he's greater useful off entering into the Nikon gadget than the 4/3 gadget used via Olympus which does no longer have a rosy destiny over the long-term.
