A Boat travels 10 miles upstream in 2 hours. Going downstream, it can travel 26 miles in the same amount of time. Find the speed of the current and the speed of the boat in still water.

    UPSTREAM

    Speed = (x-y) mph

    Speed = distance / time = 10/2 = 5

    x- y = 5 .......................(A)

    DOWNSTREAM

    --------------------------

    Speed = x + y mph

    Speed = distance / time = 26/2 = 13

    x + y = 13 ....................(B)

    ADD (A) + (B)

    2x = 18

    x = 9 mph ANSWER

    y = 4 mph ANSWER
