Xbox 360 problem (no RROD)?

So, I've had my 360 for about 2 years. I could give you a bunch of details about my usage but I don't think all of that is necessary - suffice to say I've put at least 600 hours of playtime on it and 500 or so would be within the first year (haven't played it much for a very long time).

Within the last week I've decided to start playing games again, and in the last 3-4 days it has been on for about 26 hours time total. Now here's the problem: I was playing, and all of a sudden the game/xbox freezes, makes this weird scratching sound (from the tv, not the console) and has these weird glitchy lines down the screen.

I manually turn off the xbox by the button on the console and turn it back on, and it doesn't turn on - the green light in the center lights up, but no rings flash or light up, and it makes the same weird glitchy/scratchy sound. I turn it off manually again, lett it sit for ~20 seconds, then try to power it up by pressing the button on the controller - and it works, starts up, starts my game, etc.

Am I in any kind of trouble here? Is my xbox going to break soon? What was possibly the cause of this weird mess-up? I'm playing the same game I've put ~90% of my xbox's total life time on (Oblivion) and I've certainly never had this happen before - and back then I used to leave my xbox on overnight/etc whereas now I turn it off when done.

MID-POST UPDATE:

As said I started up my console and game successfully, but when I loaded the game I didn't load my save - I just let the cinematics at the start of my game run while I was making this post. This had to be running for about 7 minutes.

I then load my game and I come back to finish the post up. Within about.. 3 minutes, the same weird scratchy/glitchy sound happens and the same weird glitchy lines appear on the screen.

So what is happening? I've been using my xbox a lot recently (26 hours/3-4 days), it's in a completely open area but its not like it has a fan blowing on top of it or anything. Is this the inevitable breakdown of my 360, or something temporary where I can put a stop to it by laying off playing it for a day or two?

  • Without an error/light code it's nearly impossible to know what is happening. But what happened to one of my consoles when the dvd drive crapped out is weird things would start happening in the middle of a game like Crackdown - people would be driving down the road in cars, except only the people had populated the screen, no cars!

I am thinking you are having a dvd drive issue - is your game installed to your hard drive? If not, try doing that, it only uses the dvd drive to spin up the disc and verify the full version is in the disc tray, then it plays strictly from the hard drive after that.

  • ok so first find a guy to do this for you it will cost maybe around 20-40 dollars just to let you know they will open it up so this will void your warranty as they will install a new fan in the 360 to keep it cool but just make sure you can call them first to make sure you can trust and meet him in person. Or as said in one of the answers buy an inter cooler and do it yourself and make sure the fan is not block or your 360 is not on a carpet i found this out the hard way lol. or if you get rrod again pay 90 or so dollars cuz they will fix it and probably put in a new fan for you good luck.
