How to relieve serious menstrual cramps?

For the first two days of my period, I have cramps that can drive me to tears. Ibuprofen doesn't really work anymore and Pamprin either doesn't work or takes way too long. I can't even lay down without extreme pain (so there's no chance of sleeping it off). How can I relieve this piercing pain??

Mature answers only, thanks.

Update:

I'm a teen and don't yet go to an OB/GYN. I hate medical places, so any at-home quick-relief ideas are very much appreciated!

  • As a teen, I had bad cramps too. I used Midol and a heating pad. Hold the heating pad against your sides where the cramps are. My midwife recommends Tylenol instead of Ibuprofen because Ibuprofen can increase the bleeding. Also, it seemed to help to get in a fetal position or on my knees on the bed or floor.

  • Being a girl sometimes....sucks! Geez. Well, I know for me I take two Midol or Aleve tablets (for the first dose ONLY) then one every 5-7 hours after that to keep it in my system. Then I go take a nice HOT shower. Let it sink in for while. Something about heat eases the pain of menstrual cramps. Also, the shower will cleanse you both physically and mentally. Trust me, works every time. Then get a heating pad (I use the electric ones with a cloth slip-on covering), lay it on your bed, lay on top of it with it positioned under your lower abdomen, and take a little nap. I have had some honestly horrific experiences with cramps so I know how you feel. Especially the ones that involve vomiting....ya won't go into too much detail. I mean its like we're having pregnancy morning sickness and we're in labor at the same time. God-awful. Anyway, hope these things help you out. Good luck!

  • Try a heating pad and go talk to your ob/gyn. There are so many different types of pain medications out there, and they should be able to write you a script for something. I personally used anaprox for a long time, then got on birth control (that really helped to regulate my period and take care of the cramps).

  • I have the same problem....My cycle is consistent so I usually take Pamprin that morning or afternoon before I know I am going to start and that really helps. Also use a heating pad while laying down or you might have to go to your OB-GYN. Good luck!!!

  • I'm going to tel you a cheap way to do this. you can take a damp towel and heat it up and put that on your abs also use icy hot around your abs and your back, it helps me when I am ready to sleep. Drink hot tea and eat hot foods(Not warm or spicy) maybe chocolate, no caffeine it makes the cramps worse(so stay way from coffee), ginger is good too. they have ginger candies at Trader Joes for about $2.

I know how you feel cause mine makes me have diarrhea and naseau and this helps me sleep like a baby. Also Excedrin helps too. Eat some meat and veggies too so you won't be so sleepy.

  • Take calcium, magnesium and Vit D supplements. Pre-menstral your blood calcium drops, when you start your period it takes a major nose dive which causes the mood swings women endure and the unbareable pain you're feeling. Take one or two calcium tablets hourly (should relieve the pain quickly) and then taking one daily help with the cramping. (Vit D and magnesium helps your body absorb calcium, otherwise it just washes out). In future take extra calcium supplement a week prior to starting your period and you won't struggle with these cramps.

  • Poor thing, I feel your pain!

Try taking a warm bath... toss in your favorite aromatherapy stuff and just relax.

I've heard that doing some mild physical activity might help, such as walking.

If you are willing to try supplements, i have also read that taking calcium, magnesium might help.

When you go to bed, put some hot compresses on your tummy to alleviate the pain.

    I hope you feel better!

  • as nasty as it may sound the only way to help is masturbation or sex, if you have a bf just tell him to do you...doesn't like blood try the shower or he should grow up..but if your by yourself just get yourself off helps a lot trust me

  • chamomile tea helps mine
