n4003 diode Vs n4005 diode?

I have a blown n4003 diode on a cb radio (cross wire + and - now there is a crack across the diode) i replaced it with n4005. And still have no power... Can you please tell me if i need the exact diode and why or tell me if it should have worked and it could be something else blown.

Power lead input is 12v for a car Battery (and i have + and - the right way round now)

Thank you in advices

  • I hope you mean 1N4003 and 1N4005 ??

The higher numbers in the series 1N4001 through 1N4009 are higher voltage versions, but the rest of the specs are identical, so you can always substitute a higher number part for a lower numbered one.

You probably have something else dead, such as a fuse. If you connected the battery backwards, the diode would have prevented any problems.

  • The n4005 should work. I'm betting there is another issue. Do you have a voltmeter? If you do measure the voltage coming out of the diode. If you get voltage on the other side, the diode isn't the problem.

  • check for a blown fuse.
