Ideal Dogs for Apartments?
What is an ideal dog for an apartment? I have a small fenced yard and I'm looking for a low energy dog. I don't want a toy breed and I've heard that english bulldogs are great. Does anyone know of any others?
Update:Please note: NO toy breeds. Yorkies, while I love them, are not an ideal dog for my husband.

oddly enough, the bigger breeds (great danes, boxers, newfoundlands etc) make really good apartment dogs because they are very mellow and lazy. They need minimal exercise, and are content to lay on your couch while you're at work. As far as smaller breeds go, they have more energy, are usually more vocal (and neighbors wont like you) and need alot of attention.
The best dog that I can think of is a boxer. They are great with kids, they don't have a strong prey drive and won't try to kill every cat and bunny in your yard, they aren't very vocal and will bark very rarely, they have short hair (easier to clean up) and they have a low energy level.
If you don't want to go really big, a pug has the same qualities, and they even have a cute little squished nose...
On the other hand, a Bichon Frise is a good choice too. They are small(er) and they are very low maintenance.
Hope this helps!
Dogs need a lot of time. They also cost a lot of money. IT can be OVER 1,000 DOLLARS for the first year. About 700, and even more, for one year. I'm guessing you don't have an extra $1,000. Not to mention emergency vet money. With most aparments, you have to pay every month to have a dog. You might want to consider two cats the shelter. Cats are usually more independent, they will be ok when you're not around. If you get them from a shelter, they will be happy that you love them. When you get an animal from a pet store, they hide that the animal was poorly breed and that it probaly has a disease or will. A hampster would be nice, too. You could also get a pair of rabbits, but you have to let them out of their cage supervised for a while every day. Honestly, I don't think chihuahua's make good aparment dogs. They can be very noisey. When you're in an aparment, you need a quiet dog. Just because a dog is small, that doesn't mean they would be a good apartment dog.
French bulldogs make excellent apartment dogs, very low energy and non barkers. Boston terriers, pugs, english bulldogs, mastiffs, greyhounds, and great danes are also excellent quiet appartment dogs with low exercise requirments. I would avoid high energy breeds, most of the sporting and herding breeds. Terriers and toys can be prone to barking, small and giant breeds lend themselves best to apartment livfe
English Bulldogs are not a "toy" breed.. they can easily weigh around 50 pounds!
I suggest you check out breeds listed in the toy group, as most of them were bred for companions, and most are quite content with about 20-30 mins of exercize daily
Think about other things you'd like out of a dog, such as amount of grooming needed, friendly or more likely to alert, trainability, etc... and consider these while researching..

Careful. Apartment sized dogs don't always have apartment size temperaments, vocal chords, or personalities.
Bulldogs are good, but they need exercise even when they don't want it.
Also French Bulldogs. Really, any of the smaller bully breeds would be good. They like their own space, they don't always need a lot of it.
Cocker Spaniels are good in apartments. So are English Bulldogs, but they have alot of health problems. The often have breathing issues and are common to have demodectic mange. They are really sweet dogs, tho.
well American bulldogs can sometimes be just a little taller than an english but they like to run and play non-stop. i'd say chiwawa or a yorkie and if ur not concerned about fur westy's are precious!
