How do i install extra RAM in a Desktop?
Hello
I have a windows 7 home premium (Compaq HP) Desktop with 2GB RAM. It's a great computer but i feel it can do with more RAM for the tasks i do. Hardware side of things is not a thing i've done before. I've been told to take the screws out the side and plug in the memory chip somewhere. There are no screws at side of computer so i presume i unscrew them or the one screw from the back to take the side off and when that's done where do i plug the chip into ? The RAM chip i have in mind is Kingston 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM Memory if that's compatible with my computer model ? . If anyone would give me instructions on the entire procedure(in simplified lamens terms) i'd be very grateful. Thanks

And they have a system scanner to check compatibility, and you can buy it from them if you like.
Installation is easy - take the side off the case, undo clips and remove the old ram strips (unless you're keeping them and adding new stuff, though I suspect you will be replacing), add the new ones.
Here's an installation video;

Make sure to get the exact same ram as you had in your computer before, just at a higher memory. Go to www.crucial.com and run its memory scanner to see what type of memory is in your machine (i assume it would be ddr2 memory at 800 something MHz) and also make sure that if your computer has 4 RAM slots, to buy 2 sticks to add to your current ram (like instead of getting 1 4GB stick, get 2x2 GB sticks to make sure you take advantage of the dual channel memory function). Same applies to if you have only 2 RAM slots, just take out your other RAM first and replace both slots. Now to install it, thats the easiest part, just push the little tabs on the sides down, pull out the old ram (or if you have 2 free slots pull the tabs on the empty slots) and push the new sticks down into the slots. Makes sure its facing the right way, and use a little force until it locks into place then youre done.
It's really easy, just open up the case (after unplugging from the wall) and locate the motherboard.
You'll usually see a series of one to four slots that will contain the present memory cards.
Pull those out by pressing the release levers (usually on either end of the memory card) and popping them out.
Replace with the new boards and assure that they seat properly in the slots being careful to install them in the right direction.
There's usually a notch at some point on the lower end of the car (the end that plugs into the motherboard).
That's it. See the video below for reference:
Its not necessarily about Computer Model Compatibility when you install RAM Memory! its about which type of RAM It uses and which type will it require to run! see if you can still at more RAM, there should be most of computers have 2 to 3 for standards, and for gaming is 4 to 6 so wish you luck! make sure to get DDR3 type 4GB to 8GB Single Card! more higher the more expensive!
Hi barry
this procedure for someone not knowing about electro static precautions should not be attempted due to static electricity from synthetic clothing damage can be caused to the motherboard and it's associated components. so take to tech for them to fit the memory strip.
also as most computers have only two ram slots the chances are that what is currently resident in your desktop computer is two 1GB ram strips so it would be best to change not one strip but both.
The above solutions are considerable; additionally make valuable the ram sticks are the two a similar fee (i.e. a million gig and a million gig). many times the mobo calls for 2 of a similar length. additionally they should be the two DDR or DDR2 (in uncommon cases some older version of RAM). verify the unique keep on with see what form.
you cant fit what you like.
firstly you should check how many slots you have
then you need to check how much ram each slot is allowed to have
then you must buy RAM with the same technical details as the ones
you have at the moment. HP's wont work with any old stuff.
you can start by visiting here -->
find out what your motherboard is
check if your motherboard has enough 240 pin memory slots for another chip
go find out how to put the memory slot in the motherboard
viola
U don't need more ram trust me unless ur into 3d designing if u know what I mean but up to u its ur money
