Im considering becoming a DOULA.?

I wondered if anyone can tell about their own experiances, both being a doula and having a doula with them.

And if you are or had a birth doula, or post-birth doula?

Many thanks

  • I have never been a DOULA, but as an ex medical rep specialising in fertility, I have come across a few, and have found them of great help and comfort to patients.

This is a good site which I hope will help yu in your quest.

  • I'm a certified doula with Childbirth International. I have also had doulas at my last 2 home births, and it was wonderful to have their support. I feel like so many of my own clients when I say " I couldn't have done it without them!" It is an awesome thing to be a part of this personal and sacred event in a families life. Good luck with your future as a possible doula!! ;)

  • I am a doula, trained with A.L.A.C.E. 6 years ago. There were unfortunate circumstances that didn't allow me to practice in the field right away, but I have had very positive experiences with Doulas. They are wonderful! The world can definitely use more of them... go for it!

  • My best friend had a very negative experience with her first birth in the hospital setting (without going into details, it was very intervention-oriented and she wound up having a C-section) and opted for a home VBAC birth for her second child. She had a birth doula at home (as well as her midwife) and was VERY pleased with the experience. The doula was very knowledgeable and comforting to my friend throughout the process, allowing the midwife to focus on some of the "mechanics" of the delivery. Post-birth, she was pretty confident because it was her second child, so the doula in her case was more for the birth itself.

I think it's wonderful that you're considering becoming a doula. I assume you're already familiar with DONA International, yes?

  • I had a doula when my daughter was born. The experience was invaluable! I believe that she is the main reason I had such a positive birth. I think everyone should have a doula by their side when giving birth!

  • I had a doula through my natural child birth 6 years ago. She was AWESOME!! I really had a good experience with her, she was calming and did everything i needed. Even the simple things like holding my hand was so needed. I would recommend using one to anyone! I am myself considering becoming one and being able to help other women!

  • I'm a labor and delivery RN x 22 yrs. and love it when Douala's are part of the team to help a woman experience the birth she desires, most of the Douala's have been great as support for the pt. though I must say there have been times when they forget their roll as support and try to medically manage the labor, they do not have the knowledge or training for this and can actually delay care and interfere with what is best for mom and baby. but like I said before this is not the norm most are wonderful and make the Pt's relaxed and feel somewhat in control of an event that really has no control you moms know what I mean. labor has it's own mind, LOL. Best of luck and welcome to the team.

  • Oh I would love to do that,i'm hoping to train in midwifery when my kids are all at school. Good luck!

  • I'm not sure I have heard of this, can you tell me what a DOULA is? Thanks
