does anyone know how to explain how to do a stem and leaf plot?

i have been trying to understand how to do this for 2 years now and my math teachers just dont know how t explain it good enough for me to understand. im given a whole bunch of differnt numbders and dont know what to do with them all i think i know if that the stems will be on the left collum and the leaves will be on the right.

example: two police officers surveyed the spedes of cars passing the school. one cop used a radar gun to determine the speade of each car in kilometers per hour. she recorded the following speeds:

48, 37, 54, 38, 44, 46, 29, 42, 41, 52, 51, 40, 38, 50,39, 43, 54, 38, 48

can someone please help me understand this and what i need to do ? its also saying , for each piece of the >Update:

so what would it mean when its asking: *the range of speads

*how many speads were recorded in the plot

*what was the median speed

* and what spede was the mode

( i dont understand what the mean by the range of speds then mode or the median )

  • Your stem is the digit in the tens position. So, {2, 3, 4, 5} will be in the left column. Your leaves are the digits in the ones position. Let's use 2 as our stem, so for each piece of data that has 2 in the tens position, you will write the digit in the ones position (leaf) in the right column, like so:

    2 | 9

    That is equal to 29.

Now using 3 as our stem:

    3 | 7, 8, 8, 8

    And 4:

    4 | 8, 4, 6, 2, 1, 0, 3, 8

    And lastly 5:

    5 | 4, 2, 1, 0, 4

That is how you put data into the stem and leaf plot. If you wanted to take data from the stem and leaf plot, here is an easy trick. Multiply the number in the left column by 10 an add one of the leaves to thst number, and you do that for each leaf. Here is an example:

    4 | 1, 5, 3, 8

The first number is 41, the second is 45, the third is 43 and the fourth is 48.

    Hope this helps you!
