Homemade popcorn - healthy?

On the bag of pure kernels it says 100g contains about 500kcal

I have heard that popcorn is low in calories though?

Is the 100g popped or unpopped?

Cheers in advance

  • The "100 grams" stated on the bag mean 100 grams Unpopped.

Going by the bag yellow popcorn unpopped that I have - my bag says:

38 grams unpopped makes 4.5 cups popped popcorn which is 140 calories. That's a decent amount of popcorn to eat and a decent amount of hand-to-mouth munching action that should satisfy most people. That said, popcorn is low in calories when you consider how much eating action you can get from it. It is also high in fiber and won't cause your blood sugar levels to spike and drop so it won't make you tired. The problem is that when you put lots of butter on it, the calorie count goes up tremendously.

If 38 grams makes 4.5 cups popped, then 100 grams should make around 11.84 cups of popped popcorn. That's a whole lot of popcorn for 500 calories.

  • 100 Grams Of Popcorn

  • it does not matter. Grams is a measure of weight. The popped kernels weigh the same as the unpopped. They are just bigger and take up more volume

    HOWEVER

If you cook them in oil, then the calories will go way up. The on-bag calories are assuming air-popped corn.

  • Actually, you can make popcorn only with olive oil. It is better and more healthy than using butter too. However, don't place popcorn in hot oil as you write because you are going to harm yourself. Also its better to make them inside a closed saucepan. And for God's sake don't put them into the microwaves because although easy, these waves are not very good.

  • very good, the best don't add butter and keep it natural-low in cal
