Is Krav Maga Worldwide "real" Krav Maga?

Krav Maga Worldwide has a national training center in Los Angeles. While Krav Maga is generic Hebrew, there has been some controversy because these guys trade marked the name. My main question is whether this is "true" Krav Maga.

  • Business practices aside, what they teach is very real. Is it the same as Israeli military Krav Maga? Mostly, but of course self-defense and war do have need for different techniques.

The Krav Maga organization out of LA is the first American school of Krav Maga, and the instructors that started it were the first invited to Israel to learn this system and spread it. They are probably the most respected KM organization, and have the most stringent training and (especially) instructor certification regimines I've ever seen.

KMW has levels of curriculum and certification (called Phases) the highest being Law Enforcement/Military. That is probably closest to what is taught to the Israeli armed forces, but includes things that civilians would not usually need or be interested in. This does not make what is taught in the 'civilian' classes 'not real' (most of you don't need to know how to roll out of the back of truck with a shotgun and come up shooting).

Krav Maga is so real, it's unreal.

  • There are two versions of Krav Maga. The original that is taught to the Israeli military, and the civilian version. As to Who is qualified, there is the rub. Some instructors are teaching the authentic system, and some are not. Some of the instructors teaching the real system are qualified to teach, while others are not. What is apparent is that Krav Maga schools and classes are popping up everywhere. Many are good schools. However, many are just riding the wave of popularity to make a buck. Most people walking into a martial; arts school, or Krav, Maga class have not idea if what is offered there is realistic or not. In the martial arts, most new students come from students recommending their school and instructor to their friends. The problem there is that the students that are recommending their school usually don't know if they are being taught correctly. Most students are happy with the place they train, or they would not be there.... So they are likely to recommend their school to a friend. I have visited many good and bad martial arts schools. I often hear parents talking during the class. One mom is happy that little Johnny just got his black belt. She is telling the other mom that she should sign her son up there too.

We may believe something, but that does not make it true. And Sincerity is no guarantee for truth!

  • I knwo nothing about krav maga except what I have learned from your answers and watching fight quest, I just think it's funny I see no answers from the main people on here that are always krav maga is the deadliest. I even e-mailed the link to a couple to make sure they hadn't missed it. I don't care for lolipops but I get two points.

  • After the death of the founder

After Imi's death, a number of different schools and associations developed around the world. Although there is an ongoing debate as to who may claim to be Imi's legitimate successor(s) and whether the term "Krav Maga" refers to a specific martial art or is simply a generic term (much like Boxing),[5] it is generally accepted that there are five mainstream Krav Maga umbrella organizations:

The Israeli Krav Maga Association (IKMA)[6]

The International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF)[7]

    Commando Krav Maga (CKM) [8]

The Krav Maga Association of America (KMAA)[9]

The European Federation of Krav Maga (FEKM)[10]

    Krav Maga Incorporated (KMI)[11]

Israeli IMI System - Krav Maga (IIS)[1

  • Im thinking authentic Krav Maga would be taught by Isrealis or former Massad.

  • nothing is real krav maga it's just a money making scheme,
