Activate American Express Gift Card?

I got a gift card from my grandpa and he just gave me the card no directions or anything . I tried to use it online today to order something and it said not a valid security code . I called the number on the back of the card and it said nothing about activation it just told me my balance.

    call 877-AXP-GIFT and wait until they tell you to press 3 for questions about a declined purchase and it will go to a representative then ask about registering
