how do I trace an insurance policy from 2008?

my dad has got an insurance policy that took the final payment in 2008 , problem is mum has inadvertently thrown out all the paperwork on it as she has dementia , dad is trying to trace the company but it appears to have changed hands , he phoned his bank the HSBC to ask them for the direct debit details of who the premiums were paid to and was told that they destroy their records after 12 months , Indian call centre worker told him that there is nothing he can do about it , i don't believe this and would greatly appreciate any help on this matter , has anybody out there had experience of this and got any advice for me, with thanks

  • You personally do not trace it.

If it needs to be traced, then your father traces it. You do not.

First, he tries to find something that he still has that has information. For example, he might have kep a bank statement from HSBC for tax reasons that might also mention the name of the insurance company.

If that does not work, then he contacts HSBC in writing, by mail, without using the telephone. He sends the letter to HSBC's address in the U.S., not to the Indian call center. Even if you have to type the letter for him, it should be written in his name, not yours, and he must sign it himself.

  • Completely not true - it's illegal for them to destroy their records after 12 months. They must hold on to them for seven years. In the USA at least - and you DID post on the USA board.

  • I find it hard to believe that he doesn't remember the name of the company.

Is it possible to perform a search on myself?

At this time, we only allow PLS searches to be conducted on deceased individuals. However, as a consumer, you can order a copy of your MIB consumer file once each year for free, should you have one. It can only show life insurance application activity for the past seven years.
