Diesel is not faster. It might last longer with high miles but they are not faster and do not sound as good. If you get a diesel your not getting a true bmw race machine. Gas has always been faster, but might not be anymore in the future, as of now it still is. So get the petrol 320. If diesel was faster then the M3 would be a diesel. But a diesel can never have that race car feel... they can only rev about half as high as a gas motor can... meaning less quick horsepower.
I have owned a 320 ESGT, a 330GL and a 530M sport. All BMW diesels. My advice to anyone who wants a powerful car as a first or second vehicle, should definitely go for the biggest diesel engine you can get on the model you want. It is also better to buy the highest spec car too, even if it means dropping a year or so.
I have owned all sorts of vehicles since 1969 and was a real petrol engine lover until I drove a turbo diesel car.(BMW 320 )If you can get a 3 litre engine in the model you want, you'll love it. The power and torque is just mind blowing on the bit that matters between 0 to 70mph or 60 to 80mph for a quick blip overtake.Road tax is cheaper on the diesel engine also.Estimate journey MPG on 320 at 50/38 urban. 330 & 530 around 42 journey / 32 urban.
If you are a young chap willing to risk a point or two, in a diesel you could drive it flat out through the gears all day long with no fear of engine damage. Top end around the 135 mark but your licence is gone if your caught of the three digits, so plenty fast enough where it matters most under the ton.The difference between the M sport and the SE is major. My 530 M sport had automatic hydraulic suspension, run flat tyres and a clever computer that changed the BHP to suit your driving at the time. My 320 SE sport had just stiffer suspension than the bog standard model.Hope I've convinced any reader to go diesel!!!
What's the difference? One's a petrol and one's a diesel. One sounds like a tractor and one sounds like a BMW.
Your choice, but I couldn't stand the embarrassment of driving what looks like a prestige car but sounds like a London taxi, but some people have no shame...
Financially it's not worth having a diesel if you're not doing big miles in it anyway, the running costs are far higher than for a petrol engine, and if you're only using it a couple of days a week you'll never feel the benefits of the slightly better mpg.
No comparison. Diesel all the way. Faster, more economical, more torque, more reliable (overall) and no they don't sound at all like a tractor any more. Also, if your into it, the modding potential is a lot better bang for buck. These are easily capable of 230bhp for not a lot of pennies and no real detriment to mpg or reliability. Only thing I will say, get the swirl flaps removed. Cheap job that isn't worth not doing, just in case. Look it up. On this age car they maybe no longer a problem. Can't remember off top of my head.
BMW is making plans to introduce a clean 3-sequence in 2012. So i could save the Accord for yet another 2 years then commerce it in, plus you are the different way up via approximately $5000 good now. don't have offered all those broker put in upload-ons.
