Math Problem!?

To rent an apartment, a one-time deposit is frequently required with the first month's rent. Roberto paid $900 the first month and a total of $6950 during the first year. Find the monthly rent and the amount of deposit.

All I really need to know is how to set it up if you don't want to do the whole problem. Thanks if you can help me.

  • to find out how much he paid on a monthly basis.

    (6950 - 900)/11=550

    The monthly rent is $550 and the deposit is $350

  • A deposit is usually the same as the first month's rent, so subtract 900 from 6950 and divide that number by 12 to give you the monthly rent.

  • Let x = the deposit paid

    Let y = the monthly rent

    x + y = 900 (equation 1)

    x + 12y = 6950 (equation 2)

    Then rearrange either equation (to the form "x = ...") and substitute into the other equation.

  • (x+y) + 11Xy=6950

    x+y=900

    y = rent

    x = deposit

    900+ 11y = 6950

    11y = 6950-900

    y=6050/11

  • 900-r=d

    900+11r=6950

    d=deposit

    r=rent

    i think. . .

    r=550

    d=350
