I'm pretty sure the Canon PowerShot family of cameras captures .AVI files. For playback, you need something more than the QuickTime player included with your Mac.
Options:
Download and install Flip4Mac. The free plugin allows QuickTime to playback AVI, WMV and some other (normally) Windows specific media files.
Download and install VLC Player. It can also playback AVI, WMV and some other (normally) Windows specific media files + MTS, MOV and bunches of others.
If you want to edit these files from you camera in iMovie, post a new questions.
in case you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder…. Your dv camcorder desires a firewire connection (ieee 1394) with the intention to acquire video, your laptop probable did no longer comprise a firewire port, so which you will could purchase one and set up it, because of the fact that maximum computers (different than in all possibility type new) do no longer comprise a firewire port, your camcorder did no longer comprise a firewire cord so which you're able to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did comprise a USB cord and that's used for downloading stills out of your camcorder. make useful your digital camera is in playback mode. Use a solid modifying software.
Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player do not support all video formats, you might have to convert it, but download VLC player. It plays all video formats.
