Do Black Cars Look Scratchy?

I got a new Nissan Altima in black and noticed that in direct sunlight it looks like there's circular scratchy patterns in the paint job. It looks great...this can only be seen when the sun hits the car directly. Someone told me that all black cars look scratchy in the sunlight. Is this true?

  • i own a shop, and yes a lot of them do look like that ,that's why they say a black car shows everything,it does ,and one thing you never want to do with a black car is run it through a car wash,in about a years time the whole car will look like you took a brillo pad to it,it will really mess it up,and always rinse it of with clear water and make sure when you do hand wash it that it has no dirt on it,all it will do is rub the dirt in to it and scratch it more, its one of the hardest colors there is to take care of though ,but also one of the best looking ones ,good luck hope this helps.

  • No, what you're seeing are "swirl marks" from where someone has done a cruddy job of buffing the vehicle. The paint should look perfectly smooth and even; if it doesn't, take it to a body shop and have the paint buffed out the correct way.

  • unless you are a perfectionist and wax black just the right way and take the wax off a certain way it will get swirl marks in it, black is the hardest color to keep nice but when cleaned right they are beautiful, my 67 chevelle is black and it's a royal pain to keep swirl marks out of it.
