video playback problems please help?

ok i have a toshiba satellite a100 laptop few years old, it crashed and i had to get a new hard drive for it, after installing everything i found i had lost the product recovery disk so i managed to install nearly all software for it and it ran great...until i found problems with the video playback whenever i watch a dvd or stream video online the video freezes and plays really slow or sometimes choppy but the audio is fine, i had the all in one codecs from windows site the kite light then kite mega tried every codec i could think of, i tweeked the acceleration i turned it down then off but that didnt work the computer works really slow too, i restart the laptop but that makes no difference either so i am now starting to lose my mind i am running windows xp professional service pack 3 i have 2gb ram and 120 gb hard drive, i have intel celeron 1.40ghrz. please can some one tell me how to fix my problem so i can watch videos properly
