Mosque dress code?

Hi, I will be visiting Turkey in a few months, and I had hoped to visit several mosques, specifically the blue mosque. I know there are rules about what you can and can't wear, and I was wondering, as a woman, what those would be for me specifically. I recently traveled to Italy and I know at most of the older Catholic churches, they provide scarves and cloth to wrap around yourself when you enter, is there a similar system in Turkey? If so, I would still like to know how to come prepared to avoid the hassle of borrowing things, but it would still be good to know in case there is a miscommunication of sorts.

  • Generally speaking, mosques prefer that female visitors cover their hair with a scarf (hijab) and wear loose-fitting clothes that cover their whole body, arms and legs included. Here are some links that provide more specific information about the Blue Mosque and other mosques in Turkey:

  • Lilly hun I don't know much about Turkey, but in general when visiting a mosque just dress modest, as you would any religious place of worship. Maybe long sleeves, pants or long skirt and a loose scarf, etc...

I did a quick search of pictures to show you as an example and came across the wonderful one of Kate Middleton visiting a mosque in Malaysia.

  • Yes you can rent a burkha for a small fee at most mosques in Turkey. They smell inside but what can you expect.

  • Whatever you wear shouldn't be their business.

I would boycott the visit forcing women to be manipulated as impure.

Once I have been refused for wearing short (pant) in a basilica in Italy ... that was 30 years ago. Since then I visited many others without giving a "s..t" for the prejudices of the Catholic church.

  • You really want to visit that part of the world right now? I would say you need to have your head examined, but if you do go, wear the full hijab, just to be safe. Otherwise, it's sex slavery for you.

  • Just loose clothes with a scarf and you're all set.
