I just traded my Tevas in for Chacos. You have it right that the Chacos do have better arch support, probably rivaling a light hiking boot. They are a bit more expensive, but you can send them back to Chaco and have them re-soled and re-webbed for reasonable prices, so one pair should last you indefinitely. You have to decide between the getting the kind with or without the toe loop. Go to a store that has both and see which you like better. I just got my pair of Diamond Stealth Z/2's and am very happy.
I like Chacos more but both are fine. I really like the arch support they have and they are really comfy. I also have noticed that the straps on tevas irritate my skin a lot so that's way I like chacos more
