5/2x + 1/4x = 11/4 + x
i know that im supposed to clear the fractions, but im not sure how...
please explain full problem in steps.
thanks
1. In order to clear the fraction, multiply the entire equation by 4 to eliminate most of the fractions so you get...
4(5/2)x + 4(1/4)x = 4 (11/4) + 4x
simplify to..
10x + 1x= 11 + 4x
2. Add the x's on the right
11x = 11 +4x
3.subtract the 4x on both sides
7x = 11
4. divide both sides by 7
x= 11/7
and that's the final answer!
Tip: Remember with Algebra, what you do to one side of the equation you need to do to the other side.
Clear the fractions by multiplying the entire equation by 4.
(5/2)x + (1/4)x = 11/4 + x
Multiply by 4.
10x + x = 11 + 4x
Combine like terms.
11x = 11 + 4x
Subtract 4x.
Divide by 7.
x = 11/7
