SD card error problem. Help Please!!?

While watching my vacation photos on my computer through my SD card, I edited some of them in terms of brightness. My windows photo viewer suddenly closed, and I was asked if I want to save or not save "the changes". I chose "Save". Then everything closed completely.

After this occurred, I re-inserted my SD card into the computer and got an error message saying that I need to format the disk (meaning the SD card). Of course I would not want to do that since I have many photos stored on the card.

Just to check if it was a problem with the card or computer, I entered my card into my camera, which I use it with for more than 2 years, and got a message saying "Card Error" //

Please help me! My photos are really valuable to me! What should I do ?!?!

Thanks to all,

  • You broke a lot of rules about using memory cards.

    1. Don't watch directly from the card. Make a copy to the computer then watch from there.

    2. Don't work with the original files. Make a copy to a separate folder in the computer and work with the copy. Save As a new filename with appended numbers depending on the edited version count.

    3. You did not copy all files to the computer once you finished shooting. Yes, this is becoming pretty much obvious now. That is what pros do. The memory card is not a permanent storage device. You just learned that (you will if you haven't yet). The first moment you reach home or the office, copy all files to the computer and make backup copies to an external hard disk or burn to a CD/DVD. Format the card after that in preparation of the next shoot.

So how to solve your problem? Use Recuva to try and get whatever you can from the card. Results vary depending on how corrupted the files in the card are. When you're done, throw the card away and buy a new one. Format first before using.

  • retiredPhil is right. The way in which your camera writes data to the SD card is different than how your computer does it, so now you've got a corrupt card.

Try the suggested software which should work just as long as you don't try to write to the card. Then reformat the card in your camera (NEVER FORMAT THE CARD WITH A COMPUTER!), and you'll be good to go.

  • Rule #1: NEVER edit files on your SD card on your PC. Copy the files to the PC first, then edit on PC. Do not write files back to SD card.

Rule #2: ALWAYS perform a "safe remove" (unmount) of the SD card from the PC when you're finished using it on the PC. Failure to do so can, and often does, corrupt the card.

  • Ummm, you screwed up when you edited the photos while they were still on the SD card. A big no-no. If your camera has some editing functions, then that is what you can do to photos on the camera. Otherwise, you have to upload them to your computer, edit them there and then display them somewhere else, such as your smart phone, but not back to the camera.

As for the photos you have screwed up, you can recover them to your computer. Use one or more of the free software programs that do that, such as the following and/or ones you find.
