fruit flies or mosquitos?
here's my original question:
we had a lemon go bad, and since then we've had these little black bugs in the house that bite - a lot. they're really hard to catch/kill - i asked my aunt and she said it sounded like fruit flies and asked if they smooshed into black when you kill them (they do) and that's what hers did when she had them. but she said they didn't bite too. so i'm not sure what's going on. the bites really itch, my son is getting all bit up too. any ideas on how to get rid of these things? i've heard vinegar helps, but all i have is white vinegar. and we don't have liquor in the house b/c i'm pregnant.

if they are biting, could they be mosquitoes? they're tiny... we're in a new area so maybe they are just different here? i'm from the east coast, we had big mosquitoes back home. we just moved to el paso and these things are tiny which is why i thought they were fruit flies.
we have an in-ground pool, but other than that, no standing water anywhere around us. it's pretty bone dry actually. however we had a water heater leak, but it had apparently been going on for a while. the bugs only happened over the past week and half. how do i get rid of whatever these things are? they're biting up my 2 year old and i really badly.
Update:it's just confusing b/c you would think there would be blood in them when we kill them.

A little bit of fruit or food in a container with some secured plastic wrap over it with a hole in it will trap the bugs. The vinegar you have will work too.

They can be biting midges or punkies or no see-ums or black flies or a biting gnat.
These small biting insects are Buffalo Gnats, also known as black flies, a common pest. They are tiny, no more than 5 mm. And yes, they do bite. Sense these are in your household, you'll need to get rid of them with Insect Repellent.
PS: Fruit flies do not bite.
If they are fruit flies, they wouldn't be biting since they are vegetarians. Are you sure it's the insects on the fruit that are biting you?
