i have a final coming up and I want to make sure I know the difference between ser and estar, what they mean, how you put them in different forms, and how you use them.

so if someone will please tell me where to put them, what they mean, and conjugate it... that would be great!

it would also be great if you included examples. thx :)

  • ser and estar

    =

    to be

    ex. am are is

~ser is permanent stuff that will never change like

    `name

    `skin color

    `emotion/physical

    `time

~estar is a condition and stuff that can change/temperary like `temperature

    `place

    `tell where u are

ex. i am sick- yo estoy enferma.(bcuz i'm not always sick)

I am from colombia=Yo soy de Colombia

(because i'm always gon b from dere)

    also

*you use estar to tell where u are!!!!

    Conjugate

    ser-(it is irregular)

    soy- I am

    eres- you are

    es- he/she/you formal is

    somos- we are

    son- they are

    Estar

    estoy- i am

    estás- you are

    está- he-she is

    estamos- we are

    están- they are

  • OH MY FREAKING GOSH! People need to STOP saying that estar is for temporay situations only, and ser is for permanent. That's such a load of bull!!! Ser is used for professions, national origins, time (which is NOT permanent), possession (this can change, I can give you something of mine), and personal traits (which also can change). Estar is used for health, emotional states, locations, and progressive tenses. For your example, you would use ser, because it's referring to someone, and it falls possessions. El bolígrafo es mio, el bolígrafo es de Ana, el bolígrafo es tuyo. The pen is mine, the pen is Ana's, the pen is yours.

  • Ser is used to express:

    the hour, day, and date

    place of origin

    occupation

    nationality

    religious or political affiliation

the material something is made of

    possession

relationship of one person to another

    certain impersonal expressions

where an event is taking place

    essential qualities

ser is used for more permanent situatiions while estar is more temporary

    present tense conjugation:

    estoy esta estas estamos estan

    soy eres es somos son

  • Ser means to be estar means to be at...ex:

quiero ser una maestra= i want to be a teacher

tiene que estar limpio=it haves to be clean

  • I have a test tomorrow on this stuff as well. Basically everyone answered, but don't forget that sometimes ser and estar don't have to be conjugated (I've made that mistake before). That's when there's a verb before it that is already conjugated. For HW to help us study we have to go to this website: http://phschool.com/

Specifically some excersises to help you are located here:

    http://phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?wcprefix=...

I just finished doing those, have fun on your testing -.~

  • I remember it like this,

How you feel are were you are always use the verb estar.

  • They both mean to be BUT

Ser means more permenant characteristics such as where your from, character traits

Estar is for temperary conditions such as location and health

Ser conjugates in the present tense as

    Soy

    Eres

    Es

    Somos

    Sois

    Son

    Estar conjugates as

    Estoy

Estas with an accent over the a

Esta with an accent over the a

    Estamos

    Estais

    Estan with an accent

  • The easiest fastest way, and least accurate, is that estar is temporary and ser is permanent. However basically, ser is a physical or emotional description, a time, origin where something takes place etc. and

estar is a temporary condition, a location,

Ser present: yo soy, tu eres, el/ella/ud. es, nosotros somos, ellos/ellas/uds. son

Estar present: yo estoy, tu estas, el/ella ud. esta, nosotros estamos, ellos/ellas/uds. estan

Soy de los Estados Unidos. (I am from the U.S.)

Estoy en los Estados Unidos ahora. (I am in the U.S.)

  • they both are a form of to be.

ser is used for permanent things. Yo soy un Hombre. I am a boy.

estar is used for temporary things. Yo estoy emocionado. I am excited.

Think of ser as "be" and estar as "being" for ex. "You are a hardhead" versus "you are being a hardhead"

  • Ser/Estar---To be

    i.e.:

    Yo soy Americana---I am American

Yo estoy en casa---I am home

    Yo soy divertida---I am fun

Yo estoy en una fiesta---I am at a party

Tenemos que estar ahi a las ocho--We have to be there at eight

Tenemos que ser responsables---We have to be responsable
