  • No it will not work without a firewire connection (card and cord).

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

    AND

if you have a laptop then you have to have an empty bay in your laptop to add a card.

  • What brand and model is your camcorder?

In general, USB is transfer between the flash memory card (with still photos) and the computer. Unless your movie is stored on the flash card, you need to use Firewire to transfer your movie from the DV tape to a computer.

  • if the mini dv camera included a cd for its installer software when you bought it you should first run it on your computer so the computer can easily detect the mini dv when you connect it via usb. :)

  • a miniDV vcam must be DV~Firewire400**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing* application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Before cable purchase** check PC for DV port {VCAM@4pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop. USB may not work.
