HELP: Comma or no comma?

Should there be a third comma (serial comma) in the following sentence?

"He was sent home by manager Lou Piniella, suspended indefinitely by the team and won't have a spot in the rotation when he comes back."

"He was sent home by manager Lou Piniella, suspended indefinitely by the team, and won't have a spot in the rotation when he comes back."

Comments

  • Both are correct, though I would say that a third comma helps clarify each item in the series in this case.

If applicable, consult your style guide to see if it has anything to say about Oxford commas.

  • Normally, you don't have commas separating two verbs in the same independent clause, but in this case, you have three verbs in a list, so a comma should be placed before the coordinating conjunction "and." The second sentence is correct.

  • In a list of three or more things the final comma is optional, so your choice. I personally like it better with because it draws more attention to the fact that it's a list.

  • no third comma
