How do you become a EMT (Paramedic)?

I'm looking into the medical field and I need to know the steps on

1. Requirements to be a EMT (Paramedic)?

And

2. How to become an EMT (Paramedic)?

And

3. How long it takes to become a EMT (Paramedic)?

I want answers that'll actually answer my questions.

  • It would help to know what state you are in.

Look up your state's EMS website for the exact details and a list of schools.

In the US, EMT is basically a 110 hour course which can be finished in 3 weeks or 3 months if you want to only go one evening a week.

Paramedic is only 6 - 8 months more or 600 - 1000 hours depending upon the state you are in.

No college is required although you can find these classes there. Votechs, Fire departments and ambulance services usually teach these courses.

Again, if you really want answers, look up your state's EMS website. No one here can give you exact details since we don't have any clue what state you are in.

  • Your local technical or community college probably has a Paramedic/EMT program. They can sometimes be very short certificate programs or actual Associates' degrees. Go to the website of your local college and look for their program. If they don't have one, look at the website for the college one town away.

You will just need to be careful that you take a longer course, not the short one. Often the short programs are not covered by financial aid, and you will have an easier time getting a job with an actual degree.

If you want exact answers that will "actually answer these questions", you will have to tell us where you live, what college you want to attend, what district you want to work in, how much money you have for school, and how smart you are. Otherwise, you get general answers.
