How do I become a video game programer?

Video games are like my main passion in life, being a video programmer would be like a dream come true to me.

Im having trouble figuring out how to become one.

- Im currently taking computer programming classes.

But everywhere Ive checked, every video game company requires the programmers to ahve at least 2-3 years of programming experience related to video games.

How do I acquire that experience if every company expect people to already have that experience?

  • Build a game portfolio. This will help you find a job.

You don't need to start with complicated programming, get used to the "concept" of creating video games and designing your own video games graphics.

Try GameMaker 7.0 first (free). It's simple enough and hardly any programming is needed. Make mini games first and build your game portfolio.

Once your comfortable, try the game engine in Blender 3D. This is the sort of application you'll use to create games in the real world. You won't (or maybe) use this free Blender 3D program, you'll use expensive software such as Maya 3D and 3D max. But for now, try Blender 3D.

Blender 3D is the closest thing that FREE to experiencing the softwares you would use to create games for companies such as nintendo, playstation, etc.

  • Dude, make a little program. Compile it and put it on a disk and send it with your resume. You can offer up some code that you have done as well. This would look good on your resume. Always apply even though they say 2-3 years of programming experience.

  • If you can't find an internship then your best bet is to try applying at games companies for (unpaid) work experience.

It doesn't matter if the companies you apply for aren't the major companies that you want to work for, you have to start small & you never know but the lowly job you aquire could become fully paid while you're there.

  • there is a place in vancouver called the art institute of vancouver, by brother is going there right now to become a video game programer, try applying there they give you guaranteed employment when u grad! my brother loves it! wile u are waiting i would suggest you read a book on c++ program tho, he did and said it helped a lot =]

  • Finish college with a programming degree and then start an entry level job, keep looking, you'll get there.

  • It's called internships. Talk to your college advisers. They're easier than you think to find.

  • get to know an expect and get all the needed tutorails

  • google it
