Do color contacts damage eyes?

I don't have any vision problems but I've always wanted to try wearing color contacts just for the aesthetic appeal. Some people say that unless you have to wear contacts its best to stay away from them because they dehydrate your eyes, can cause irritation and other problems. Is this true? Do they scratch the eye? I know that now there are good contacts out which are thin and seem to be safe. Are there color contacts out there which will not do any damage to eyes, or do all of them do some damage? Also, how much do they generally cost, how does one take care of them and how long can one pair be worn for?

  • All contacts, wether used for vanity or vision purposes should be worn with caution. They can damage your eye if you don't follow specific care instruction, and even then there is a risk.

However, if you talk to your doctor about it and you decide you want contacts they can normally be worn for as many hours as needed, then are taken out at night. There are some new options that can be worn constantly for 30 days as well.

  • I have dry eyes and wear Acuvue 2 and Acuvue color contacts and they are completely comfortable. You can wear the acuvue 2 contacts for a week at a time or for 2 weeks if you take them out each night and soak them. Contacts will not scratch or damage your eyes if you take care with keeping them clean and wash your hands well before handling them. The cheapest places to buy them is either 1800CONTACTS or wal-mart. Your eye dr. will be able to tell you which contacts are the best for your eye type. Another tip if you have dry eyes there are lubricating drops that you can use with contacts called BLINK and they really help a lot too! Good Luck

  • If you get contacts w/o a perscription then more than likely they will make your eyes feel dry. I use to wear them for years. The only thing I noticed now is that my vision is worse and I have to wear glasses, but I can't say if it was the contacts that did that. If you really want to get some color contacts I would visit your eye doctor and see what can be done. You can even try Costco, Wal-Mart, Target (eye centers). You can get fitted for contacts here and possibly get some that won't dry or damage your eyes.

  • No more so than regular contacts. If she will allow you regular contacts, there's no reason not to allow colored ones. To convince her though, ask your Optometrist for his opinion; his word will hold more weight with her than ours or yours. And she may say no anyway because she may not want to pay the extra costs or she may just not want you to change your eye color.
