Yes Acer are absolutely fine.
Stay well away from Dell, the customer service is worse than hopeless.
Bought a new Acer laptop about 3 months ago from Newegg.com. So far it's been great. Haven't had any need for customer service.
Caveats -
1. They don't come with a recovery disk. You have to make your own.
2. Hard drive is partitioned 50/50 C and D drives. I'm not sure why.
Overall I'm quite satisfied with the computer.

Acer is a very good computer company, it just hasn't gotten a good foothold in the US yet. I don't know about their customer service, never needed it.
FYI: they bought Gateway recently. Good or Bad, its too early to tell.
