upgrade windows 10 onto new ssd?

I currently have windows 8.1 installed, and I have windows 10 reserved. When the time comes and windows 10 is ready to be installed, is it possible to simply install windows 10 on a new ssd? Or would I have to clone my existing hard drive to the new ssd, and then upgrade to windows 10? Also, would windows have to be re-activated?

Upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 first and make sure that 10 shows that it's activated. Create bootable Windows 10 install media then do a clean install of Windows 10 on the SSD. Windows 10 will activate automatically without having to enter a product key.
Whatever system you registered for the Win 10 upgrade is the one that it MUST install on. It can't be redirected to another SSD. It's coming down via Windows updates...
