Fate anime series problem?

Is it okay if I ignore the first Fate/Stay Night anime adaptation and go straight to Fate/Zero? I heard there's gonna be a (better) remake this 2014 that will be closely connected to Fate/Zero. Oh yeah, and I'm new to this series, and others say that without being familiar to Fate, Fate/Zero will be so confusing and spoilerific. So what do you think I should do?

  • Okay, so here's the deal: Fate/stay night is based on a visual novel, which are like choose-your-own adventure games. Like most visual novels, Fate/stay night has multiple endings you can reach by choosing different choices, including which girl you end up with or what happens in the story.

The Fate/stay night anime adaptation adapts the "Fate" route of the visual novel.

The movie Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works adapts the "Unlimited Blade Works" route.

The upcoming series by Ufotable will *probably* adapt the third and final route, "Heaven's Feel" (though as we haven't gone much info on it, we're sure if that's what they'll really do).

They are all quite different in what happens in the story, so the upcoming series may not be a "remake" at all.

Fate/Zero is a prequel to all three main routes and was also produced by Ufotable.

So in terms of watching, it doesn't really matter which one you do first. F/SN is usually regarded as worse than F/Z though, so you may want to watch F/SN first to set yourself up for the better F/Z. Just note that the new F/SN anime (probably Heaven's Feel) may not be the same story as the first F/SN anime (Fate).

  • No, it's not going to be a remake. Everyone thought it was going to be a remake, but it was announced that it was going to be an original story with the feel of Fate/zero concentrating more on Shirou, as being the main character is apparently not enough. This news seems to haven't reached Yahoo! Answers yet for some reason, but it's true. Meaning that unfortunately you're going to have to sit through the hell of Fate/stay night to get the full experience out of Fate/zero. It is worth it though. If you must you can watch Fate/zero first, but then characters like Kirei won't seem as epic as you don't know where they end up in Fate/stay night. Also plot twists in Fate/stay night won't be as good. It is worth it though. Fate/zero is excellent.

  • Fate Stay/Night and Fate Zero were written by two different people.

And FS/N was written first, and the FZ author took the story and created the prequel for this franchise.

So please, don't ignore FS/N. Its anime adaptation may be less beautifully animated compared to FZ, but you have to remember they were created years apart. And FZ had way more budget allocated for it, in part due to the huge popularity of the Fate franchise as a whole.

So if Fate Stay/Night didn't exist and become a huge hit, we probably wouldn't have gotten Fate Zero. The order you watch the series is up to you. I recommend Stay/Night first.
