i was laying in my bed and my cat jumped on, and we had a staring contest, but then i noticed that her eyes were like pulsing back and forth, the pupils would widen and then decrease in size, why is that? does it help them see better?
it is a neurological issue. Is your cat a siamese? because it is very common in siamese cats. If this is a new thing, then it would not be unwise for your cat to see a vet.
The increase and decrease in pupil size concerns me. If there was no change in the lighting at the time, then this is serious, and could even be a sign of seizures (small enough ones that you only see this as a symptom) however cat's eyes - just like human eyes - do open and contract with changes in lighting.
Human eyes do this too though you may not notice it as much because for one, humans rarely engage in that kind of staring contest with each other, and also because our pupils are round and smaller proportionally to a cats. Changes in light in the environment and changes in where the focus is is the cause of the pupils pulsing.
Its like i camera lense. It zooms in and out, focuses and refocuses. They become thin to black rond orbs, its laso for lighting. Humans have it too. The darker it is the more wide our pupils get to retrieve more light, the thinner (in the case of the cat) the more light there is and there trying to block out most of it.
Its to focus and for lighting, thats why they kind of switch alot. haha
