How do you legalize a USA car in Mexico?

What is required to permanently legalize a vehicle in Mexico??

  • The vehicle now has to be 10 years old. You need to pay the importation tax , which depends on the vehicle. the tax will amount to $600-$800 usd.

You need to have an FM3 or Mexican status to do so. You can NOT take in on a tourist permit and sell or leave it there.

The taxes must be paid and you can take it to the State of your choice and have it plated.

The link is outdated but will give you an idea of how complicated it is

You can e-mail an acquaintance of mine that works at the embassy in Ixtapa and she will provide you with the most updated info. See 2nd link

  • If you need to legalize an USA car or truck into Mexico I can help. Laws have changed and prices have been raised a lot. Right now I can legalize pickups from year 1990 to 2000. Cars, vans , and SUVS need to be of year 2000.the truth is anybody can legalize their own vehicle. The problem many encounter is that in order to get the new Mexican title they must go to a Mexican aduana wich are located at the border and spend lots of hours waiting to get all paper work. And many run the risk of not having all the paper work necessary to get your new title. I have the contacts in Mexico to legalize your car without having to go to the border. All I need is a copy of your vehicles title and I can personally give you the new Mexican car title, new car plates, and the winshield stickers needed. All this is done in a legal manner. I live in Chicago Il so if you live near me I can be of great help. It will cost a couple of hundred dollars more than usual but it sure beats having to wait hours at the border. You can have all you need before you even begin your trip. For more info contact me at my email. [email protected]

  • Forget it.......it cost more to legalize a US car then it is to purchase a used car. Sell it and buy a used one in Mexico........BUT..........check out the government requirements for ownership........it can be really confusing.......Jim hit it on the head......

  • i have 2 numbers that u can call so they can answer ur question...its the number to the border...956-231-9657 and the other one is 956-234-3219

  • Wow what a load of malarkey. I would answer your question but run the risk of confusing yo u. Jim is correct and is is more complicated than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it depends on the year of the car.

i recommend u go to TJ or somehere near the border, and ask at the DL places

  • Depende del año
