How to do a System Restore?

I have a HP LAPTOP that is running on Windows 7 (PC) and I just want rid of unnecessary files. I only use about 10 programs, so I'll put them on a USB before I system restore. I do not have a virus (I've done Virus Scans) I just want to get rid of all the rubbish I don't need! Also I've heard it speeds up a computer? I'm not too bothered about that at all I just don't want to have to scroll through tons of Word Documents and Unwanted files to get to a program that I want.

'I just want my PC back to the way it was when I bought it brand new'

Also, a big question! When I first got my PC, it had Windows 7 and I've kept it because it's my favourite OS. When I restore my laptop to factory settings, will I keep Windows 7 or will it go? Because I don't have £50 to roll out for another OS! I DON'T WANT TO LOSE WIN7!

Thanks for you generous help, in advance :D

I don't have a virus or anything, I just have so much rubbish on my laptop,

I don't use anymore, theres only a few programs I actually use... Sony Vegas, Photoshop, Google Chrome, Word, Game Capture HD etc. I just don't want unnecessary files on my Laptop.

  • System Restore will reverse any changes made to the operating system such as registry edits, bad drivers, failed Windows updates, and such. System Restore cannot change the operating system.

Photoshop, Vegas, Chrome, Word, and other programs are *not* part of the operating system, and neither are your personal documents and files. System Restore will not affect these (though it might affect related behaviors such as which program is used to open what filetype).

You're probably asking about a *factory reset*, which will indeed wipe out any programs and files you've accumulated, and maybe also your OS if you changed it since you first purchased your laptop. (Since you bought it with Windows 7, you won't lose it, but you will need to re-install all of the updates.) The OS will be fresh without clutter, but also very vulnerable to attack until fully updated.

If you feel your laptop is just running slower than it used to, there are still ways to clean up your system without resorting to a factory reset. If you've filled up your hard drive to less than 15% free space, you have to offload files and uninstall programs you don't use anymore. Programs such as CCleaner can get rid of temporary files and settings that might cause your system to look for things that are no longer there. Defragmentation will help programs and files load faster. Tools like HijackThis and Autoruns can help you find programs that you might not want running.

  • A system restore will not do what you are asking

To take your computer back to brand new as it was at factory default settings/in the shop there are several ways depending on your os.

I have a windows 7 HP compaq Desktop and it's so easy with mine as i don't even need the disks that i was prompted to create when it was brand new. If you have the fortune to have the same type of computer here is how......

Type in start menu "Recovery manager" then when you see it click onto it and follow the prompts (you'll see the prompts when you get there).

The entire process was done within 50 minutes when i done it.

Don't forget to copy all you files (AVI. MP3. JPEG etc) on another device because they will be deleted never to return and also those programs you mention will also be deleted never to return so also copy them if you want them.

And yes you'll still have Windows 7 if that's what you had when it was brand new.

  • In order to do what you ask, you need to do a clean install

If you choose to do a clean install you will need your windows 7 disk, your windows 7 serial number, a backup of any files you want to keep and a disk or other with your motherboard drivers on it so you can get online again and update everything.

I would suggest if this is your first time, as it sounds like it, you dont do that instead you get someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you.
