Was Vivaldi a Baroque or Classical composer?

Also, was Bach Baroque or Classical? I think both were Baroque, but I'm not sure..

  • Just to clarify from Mr. Smartypants' rather confused answer ('low' Baroque? 'high' Baroque?). Both Bach (that's JS Bach) and Vivaldi were late Baroque composers, being active during the period 1700-1750.

  • Only if Low and High Baroque are relative to lines of latitude on the globe.

... Bach was in the north, Vivaldi south.

  • Both were Baroque. Vivaldi was 'low baroque' and Bach was 'high baroque'. In fact Bach was considered the pinnacle of the baroque period, and it's considered to have ended when he died in 1750. Several of Bach's children were also composers but they abandoned the 'learned style' of Bach and embraced the 'style gallant' of the next period, the classical period, which would be exemplified best by Mozart.

  • I am more the visual type, so here a nice overview with the different composer in it.
