Why is America so religious?

I'm American and I'm an atheist. I've just never understood the religious fanatacism that seems to run through this country. So, why?

  • They realise that the only way to God is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • I don't think there's really a single cause, I would say that it's partly because many of the founders were catholic nutcases who deserted England because they disagreed with the Anglican Church.

Though that doesn't really explain why the rest of the western world seems to have "grown out of it", so to speak, and america hasn't. Maybe it's something to do with a mixture of America's isolationist policies throughout the early 20th century, and how americans are very proud of their freedom and the general ideals of their country, and the religious fanatics see religion as a part of that, so they cling to it.

Personally, I think it's retarded to believe that the world is 7000 years old and the bible is literally true, but far too much of the country doesn't see it that way. As a wise man once said, "Faith must trample under foot all logic and reason". Which means that in believing in god, they are forgoing logic, so logic will not convince them otherwise and they will not change.

  • The United States was founded by a bunch of people which mostly were religious. They were from all different types of religion. Some were Jewish, some catholic or anyone if many different denominations of Christianity. Because of their varying religion and the flack that many were from England the passed the ammenment keeping government from establishing a national church or religion. Although a large percentage OD the populace claims to be Christian most don't seem to have modified their life or their public action to live according to the doctrines of their faiths. There have been very few in politics who hadn't professed to being a Christian or a Jew and none to date that I'm aware of that has openly said they are atheists. No president has been other than Christain or Jew. Obama is the first I know of which many people believe, even though he states other wise is islamic.

BOTTOM LINE: in my opinion the US image is much mor religious than reality.

  • That was one of the main reasons people came here. To escape religious persecution. So a lot of people here have had it passed down and taught throughout their family history. My family included, but I'm agnostic. I don't believe nor deny.

  • A lot of it has to do with the media and what things sell, what makes the most profit. Some of it has to do with political agendas. A lot of it has to also do with the fact that we are an immigrant country. Everyone... almost everyone here are immigrants.

  • uh...you aren't. Lots of people aren't.

    I eat meat. I don't understand vegans...

People are all different. Different needs, viewpoints, prejudices and loves.

    What makes the place great.

There was a time when you couldn't make a public statement of atheism.
