As you get older then if you can't see the far distance this compensates for teh fact you are starting to have problems with your near vision. When your far sight is corrected then you have problems with your near vision. However the optician should have checked if this was going to happen and discussed with you the options. There are several including varifocals and bifocals. Also although even if you can't see closely easily you shouldn't be getting a headache. You need to go back to teh optician and discuss the problem It is there responsibility to at least tell you if you are going to have problems with your near vision and it sounds as if there is aproblem with your perscription or the quality of your lenses. If you don't get any satisfaction get a second opinion.
If you're over 40, you start to lose your ability to SHIFT your focus from one distance to another.
So you need glasses to see far away... that means you are short-sighted... and without glasses, you should be able to see up close.
However when you wear your glasses, they shift your focus to the distance, > 6m or 20ft so that far away things are clear. Now if you're over 40, your eyes now can't shift their focus from beyond 6m back into near (say around 50cm or 20in)... this is called Presbyopia.
You may just simply remove your glasses when you want to see near... or ask your optometrist to prescribe you PROGRESSIVE lenses, where the top part of your glasses are distance prescription, and the bottom is your near prescription (or zero power depending...)
Take them in to get fixed. They might be ground wrong.
-Is the ground wavy looking?
-Are the headaches near your eyes?
-Are the glasses to tight?
