How to activate my SIM card?

I just got a new phone and I need to activate the SIM card that came with it. I have T-Mobile. Whenever I try to activate the SIM card, it keeps saying my SIM card serial number is invalid and so is my IMEI number, even though I'm entering it exactly as it appears on the card and phone. I can't find any answers anywhere else on the internet, and I really don't want to call it in because it's more hassle if it's a machine that takes the call.

    Please bring your handset and SIM to a T-Mobile store for assistance, or call the T-Mobile customer support help desk (from a working phone).
