I think often times sarcasm is used as a defense mechanism. People don't want to show their true feelings or they're uncomfortable with the conversation & they use sarcasm as a diversion. There are 2 kinds of sarcasm, I think. There's the obnoxious, rude. defensive sarcasm & there's funny, light hearted sarcasm. It depends on how they use it. Either they're overly confidant, trying to be funny or they are defensive & rude.

yes. It can be passive/aggressive in nature or just dry humor. Defense mechanism are normal... overuse is neurotic.
Yes and sometimes a habit. Sometimes saying something you want to say without having to come straight out and say it.
