Algebra 2 word problem, please help?

** If someone could show me how to do this I would really appreciate it!

How many ways can five members of the 100-member United States Senate be chosen to be put on a committee?

Comments

  • this is a committee, it is the constitution of the committee that matters, not the order in which the members are chosen, so it is a combination problem

    100c5 = 100!/(5!*95!) = 75287520 <----------

  • This is a combinations problem, except I don't remember how to do that on a calculator so I'll show you the easy way.

    There are 5 different spots; A B C D E

    There are 100 people in the senate

    There are 100 different possible candidates for the first spot

    There are 99 different possible candidates for the second spot

    There are 98 different possible candidates for the third spot

    There are 97 different possible candidates for the fourth spot

    There are 96 different possible candidates for the fifth spot

    So you would do 100 * 99 * 98 * 97 * 96 = 9,034,502,400 different ways
