do airlines provide assistance to minors flying alone?

Grand-daughter is flying from Charlotte to Columbus alone for the first time. Her safety is prime.

  • You'll probably want to ask the airline instead of us, but as I understand it they've always offered and continue to offer those services. She'll be fine on a flight from North Carolina to Ohio with or without help though.

  • I often flew alone as a minor in the early 2000's going from Houston to Charlotte and I never once feared for my safety. If you know what gate you're going to, when the flight leaves, and you have your ticket, you should be fine. If something does come up, just find an airport employee to help you :) if your granddaughter knows about "stranger danger" and what to do if someone tries to grab her, she should be fine

  • yes.

depending on her age and the airline she is flying with she may be required to be enrolled in an unaccompanied minors program and most airlines allow minors even after they have reached the age that they are no longer required to use the service to still use it until they are 18.

it comes at an extra cost that varies by airline.

  • yes, the unaccompanied minor service, which requires an additional fee but it's good for the first time flying alone in my opinion. I fly by myself without the service and i dont have any problems but if you really worry, go ahead and request it.

  • If you sign her up (and pay) for an unaccompanied minor program, she will be looked after from check-in until she meets the designated person that is picking her up at her arrival airport. If she doesn't fly on an unaccompanied minor program, she will be treated like any other passenger. Depending on her age, an unaccompanied minor program may be mandatory.
