Paracetamol overdose side effects?

I overdosed on paracetamol at the end of last year. I took 40-odd but managed to throw a lot up, and I've had tests a few months ago when hospitalised and my liver's fine in case you're wondering. But since then I physically cannot swallow paracetamol. I'm fine with every other form of medication but not paracetamol. Is this a psychological or physical reaction?

  • It is definitely a psychological reaction. The severity the pain one experiences after vomiting following a paracetamol overdose is unforgettable and as such, this will be on your mind subconsciously. You are lucky that no long term damage was done to your internal organs, many are not. I took a paracetamol overdose in 2007, I took 64x500mg and didn't get to hospital for nearly 24 hours. I stayed in hospital for 4 days and was jaundice from acute liver damage. Luckily I don't drink alcohol or have an unhealthy diet so I had no long term damage. There are alternative painkillers to paracetamol, just have a chat with your pharmacist.

  • The worst side effect of a paracetamol overdose is death. It's the metabolites of paracetamol that cause major damage to the organs in the body, and it appears 24 to 48 hours after they've been taken. Get him to hospital NOW!

  • I took an overdose of about 12 when i was about 14 and nothing happened, your very lucky

  • I would imagine it's psychological- perhaps a good thing?

I'm glad your liver is okay- you were really lucky, my friend died just taking 11.

I hope you are getting help and that things are looking up,

    Take care :)
