algebra word problem?

A pole that is 2.5m tall casts a shadow that is 1.56m long. At the same time, a nearby tower casts a shadow that is 37.25m long. How tall is the tower? Round your answer to the nearest meter.

  • Assuming that the two towers are in the same plane, we then have a simple ratio problem.

    ==> length/shadow = length/shadow

    ==> 2.5/1.56=x/37.25 <--- cross-multiply;

    ==> 37.25*2.5 = x*1.56

    ==> 93.125 / 1.56 =x

    ==> x= 59.695 meters high.

    Answer: 59.695 meters.

  • Same solution method as the other pole and building. You ought to be equipped now to do them both.

  • 2.5 / 1.56 = x / 37.25

    CROSS MULTIPLY

    1.56x = 2.5 X 37.25

    x = 2.5 X 37.25 / 1.56 = 59.695512 m ANSWER
