Does a VPN utilize symmetric or asymmetric cryptography?

Which is it? Or is it both? An explanation would be appreciated too.

  • It depends on the actual VPN as to how it provides security. Some may use symmetric and some asymmetric encryption, and some may use other forms of security mechanisms.

If you are talking about a so called VPN to get round regional IP blocking, then that is really only a proxy server with a VPN front end. The link from the proxy to your target website is not protected at all by the VPN.

  • asymmetric is very slow so it is only used to exchange the symmetric keys. The actual data encryption will use symmetric encryption.
