If you are talking about a so called VPN to get round regional IP blocking, then that is really only a proxy server with a VPN front end. The link from the proxy to your target website is not protected at all by the VPN.

asymmetric is very slow so it is only used to exchange the symmetric keys. The actual data encryption will use symmetric encryption.
