If you want real life application then it's Krav Maga no doubt.
Krav Maga has a full set of tools. It has strikes, grappling, whatever you need. It is designed to be practical and for Isralei soldiers.
Aikido, in comparison, doesn't have as many tools. It takes a long time to get good at it. The founder of Aikido didn't have practical street combat in mind as much as a philosophy of harmony. It can work, but, would take a lot more effort and time.
Watch vidoes here on the internet and you will see plenty of reasons why Krav Maga is better to take.
More important than any style is your quality and frequency of training. You see what I mean. If you hear that Krav is more practical and then you go out and buy Bob's discount Krav Mag DVD because there are no good schools around then you just screwed yourself up because your heart was set on a style As a generalization, Akido as a style is very difficult to grasp, I do not believe a student can use this in the streets for combat until they have had years of training, where as Krav is a quick short training program to teach troops en masse. Check out all the schools in your area. Do not limit yourself to a style. Instead find a quality training location, you will be much happier in the long run. If you need tips on what a "good school" is please visit old Yahoo questions.
Aikido highly stresses the "Do" aspect, as a result, combat effectiveness suffers greatly as its main focus is the Do
Krav Maga, if i remember right is not a martial art, but a combat system. It focuses on combat, but is severely lacking in moral development, health concerns, or any other aspects followed by martial arts or the "do"
One martial art can not be better than another. It all depends on the practitioner. A gun is only good if you can aim and a hammer is only good if you can hit a nail.
Check out all of the schools in your area and choose the one with the best teacher. Having a good teacher is the most important thing. The style is secondary.

Then if it's for real life applications, you're not going to hurt anyone with Aikido so I would say Krav Maga if it is available in your area to take.
